Fresh Cheese and Ham Roll with Sesame Seeds

- 500g / 1.1lb Puff Pastry, chilled and rectangular
- 150g / 5.3oz Fresh Cheese
- 120g / 4.3oz Air-dried Ham
- 1 Large Egg
- 3 tbsp / 45ml Black Sesame Seeds
- 20g / 0.7oz Fresh Basil
1. Preheat your oven to 392°F (200°C).
2. Unroll the puff pastry and lay it flat on your countertop.
3. Spread a layer of fresh cheese over one half of the pastry, leaving a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border around the edges.
4. Add sliced air-dried ham on top of the cheese, followed by a sprinkle of chopped fresh basil leaves and stems.
5. Season the mixture with a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper to taste.
6. Roll the pastry into a tight log shape, starting from the long side.
7. Place the rolled pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam-side down.
8. Brush the top of the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle with about two-thirds of the sesame seeds.
9. Bake the pastry in the middle of the oven for approximately 15 minutes, or until it turns golden brown.
10. Remove the pastry from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
11. Using a serrated knife, cut the pastry into bite-sized pieces and place them on the baking sheet with the cut side facing up.
12. Sprinkle the remaining sesame seeds over the pastry pieces and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
13. Let the pastry cool completely before topping each piece with a dollop of tomato pesto and some extra fresh basil leaves.
14. Serve and enjoy!
